We're All In This Together, But They Aren't

It looks like the US isn't the only country in which the educational-financial complex enriches useless bureaucrats on students' backs via education loans, a.k.a. student debt.

In the UK, Ed Lester, the head of the Student Loans company, is paid 182,000 pounds (a bit less than 300,000 dollars) annually--more than what the Prime Minister makes--without having any taxes taken from it.

It seems that cushy deal was signed off by Universities Minister David Willets and was passed on to Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander for his approval.

Of this scandal, Left Foot Forward wryly noted, "We're all in this together, but they aren't."

  1. To quote a great British writer:

"Some animals are more equal than others."

  2. Nando--This country really is turning into an "Animal Farm," isn't it?

  3. Absolutely, the political class, i.e. politicians, policymakers, pundits, consist entirely of pawns. They are manipulated by the owners of the country, i.e. they have no mind of their own and not much free will. The military leaders and churches are stronger chess pieces, such as the bishop of rook. They are likewise conrolled and operated by the true powerbrokers.

The (mouth)pieces then mimic what the owners want, i.e. "Go to school. Take out student loans. Be compliant." And Orwell was correct: the "leaders" are pigs.

  4. No in the UK they have free health care, and if you can't pay your student loans (which are not outrageous) they get discharged. Hardly the same!

  5. 10:36--It's true that the UK has free health care. And tuition is indeed less, so the loans aren't as obscenely large as they are in the US. But it's not as easy to discharge them as you might think.

Still, don't you think it's a bit outrageous that Ed Lester would make more than the PM, and that his salary is tax-free?
